Week 7 - MEDELLIN!
I love this place. There is nothing like it. I got into Medellin at around 10 after waking up at 230 to leave. It was a long day. But we got in and had to do a bunch of immigration stuff for the latinos. Then we went to the chapel at around 4 oclock. It was so cool, they had us run through a bunch of missionaries and gave president a big hug! It was so fun and the experience was awesome. After this they gave us food and it was more rice. Surprising right? We got up and introduced ourselves and told some stuff about ourselves. It was great. Everyone was super nice. After a bunch of food and a few interviews we found out our comp! My comps name is Elder Wilson! He is a gringo and has been out for 20 months. As I am starting my mission he is finishing his. So he has a lot of really good advice. Its a great time with him.
Anyways, our area is prado 1. We are in the north east part of Medellin. On a mountain. And the roads are straight up. Yay. Haha no it is a great time, we walk probably around 8-12 miles a day. Either straight up or straight down. My calves are going to be huge when I am home. I found out that lunch is the big meal here. And no one eats dinner. Weird right? so we haven't really eaten dinner this whole week. But we get great lunches! We sometimes take taxis and buses but most the time it is walking. What else is exciting about this place. The people are really really nice and some of them look like they are about to beat you up, but then they say: Cubo parce! If i spelled it right it is like hey whats up bro. Its hilarious.
Okay, the good stuff now, we had like no investigators in our area when we got here. We were both new to the area so we had to figure out where to go and how to get around. It was and is an adventure trying to figure out how to get around. Its fine we always make it. But with the investigators, we started out Tuesday night at 7 contacting people. I was about to pass out and I knew like no Spanish. It was a challenge. But after about 10 houses I finally got a little bit down to get a conversation going. But we got 2 new future investigators in this time. Then the next day we got up early and contacted pretty much the whole day. Up and down the streets knocking. We got into a house and they were really interested in our lesson and then two days later we lost the investigator. It was rough. One of our days here we lost two investigators because they were weird. one of them said we were teaching about having 7 prophets? And the other said they didn't want to have any thing to do with us after having us in their house? Its fine. We now have about 6 new investigators and probably 30 or so future investigators. So that's really exciting!! We have had a very productive week. In so much as we both got sick. I got sick with a stupid cold and it was killing me yesterday and today I am super week. Elder Wilson had some weird stomach bug thing. But we pushed through and taught lessons and contacted.
One of our investigators that we really like is Alexis, he is really interested and makes fun of my Spanish in a fun sort of way. But he really likes what we are teaching and he wants what we are saying. But he has a bad adicione con drugs. Like some hard drugs. So that's rough. I soon found out that everyone here is like addicted to marijuana. I have no idea if that is spelled right. You smell it on the street like 90 percent of the time. Its great! Anyways, we also have a new family that gives us free food and free coke all the time that we are teaching. It just shows if you bring something good into someones live they return the favor with food and coke. Its a great deal. We really like this family. La familia velez. They both said that they would be baptized in the first lesson. So this week we are going to set a date with them. They also have two kids and they are super cute. We also ran into a guy that sells empanadas and created his own church here. We taught him and then the next day he didn't want to do anything with us. My comp tells me people just create their own churches here because they are too lazy to find the right one so that is fun.
Well that is my email this week. Elder Wilson is awesome and helps me a ton. He is super super fluent in Spanish so that's awesome. We are working hard and we plan on getting 7 baptism dates this week. Wish us luck! I love you all! If you have any questions or want to send some love, go ahead and email me.
